INDEPENDENCE INTERDEPENDENCE
hand in glove
holding hand holding glove
peas in the pod of
most perfect union.
Among the lessons
Fred Hampton
and Bernadine Dohrn
taught us was that
it is one thing to
declare one’s independence
from across the sea
(see this and this)
and it is another thing
entirely to do so from
within the insecurity of
the homeland’s borders
patrolled as they are
by hyperactive patriots
wearing lapel pins
of blind allegiance.
We are all
dependent upon
one another for our
interdependent
independence.

I have come to experience
that I might never be
independent,
but still
I may be free.
Spiritually free:
all inclusively
interdependent,
with faith in the limitless
and hope in the ever-changing
search for harmony and peace.
